Offering Reprieve and Respite Care

Horizons provides respite to caregivers, giving short-term relief from the demands of caring with a child with special mental health care needs. 

We serve caregivers who need a temporary respite and also train providers to offer care. 

Why Respite Care? 

• Respite care provides a break for child and family/household.
• Respite keeps the child in the home and reduces the likelihood of out-of-home placement.
• Respite provides structure to the child and creates increased family stability.

When is Respite Necessary?

• When a family needs an occasional break from the 24/7 realities of caregiving.
• When the demands of caring for a child or youth with special mental health needs are too great or complex for a regular caregiver/babysitter.
• When a family needs to refresh, to be better able to cope with complex responsibilities.

What Does A Respite Day Look Like?

• The child is included in a Respite Care Provider’s family routine.
• Medications are given as directed.
• Progress notes are recorded. 

How Can I Become a Respite Care Provider?

Horizons trains individuals to provide respite care. Respite providers are compensated $65/day. Qualified individuals must:

• Be at least 21 years old
• Provide the necessary home environment and pass a home licensing inspection
• Complete required training
  • Mandt, offered at HMHC
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Online Medication Course
  • PS MAPP, offered at HMHC
